Honours

  • Goal of the Year2014

Recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick five in the 2006 Pre-Season Draft, Matthew White established himself as one of the league's quickest players during his eight seasons with Richmond. Despite possessing blistering pace and the ability to break lines, White often battled consistency issues at Punt Road and frequently found himself on the fringe of selection or utilised as the substitute. However, a breakout season in 2013 showcased his true potential as a damaging outside runner, catching the eye of rival recruiters just as he became eligible for free agency.

White crossed to Port Adelaide as an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2014 season, a move that immediately revitalised his career. He slotted perfectly into Ken Hinkley's high-octane game plan, playing predominantly as a wingman and high half-forward who could punish opposition turnovers. His debut year at Alberton was arguably his best, highlighted by winning the 2014 Goal of the Year for a running effort against his former club. Although his final seasons were marred by injuries, including a serious pectoral rupture, White retired in 2017 as a respected speedster who successfully maximised his talents after moving interstate.
