Bio
Originally elevated from the rookie list after being recruited from North Adelaide, Matthew Wright carved out a respectable tenure at the Crows as a rotating midfielder and forward. Despite being a consistent contributor who played over 90 games for the club, he fell out of favour and was delisted at the conclusion of the 2015 season. Handed a lifeline by Carlton as a delisted free agent, Wright seized the opportunity to reinvent himself at Princes Park during the club's rebuilding phase, proving to be an astute recruit for the Blues.
Renowned for his work rate and goal sense rather than athletic flash, Wright operated primarily as a high-half forward who could push into the midfield to win contested ball. His time at Carlton proved surprisingly fruitful; he instantly became a focal point of their attack, winning the club's leading goalkicker award in his debut season in navy blue. After providing crucial experience to a developing list and serving in the leadership group, he retired from the AFL level in 2018 to return to South Australia, transitioning immediately into a dual role as a development coach and captain of Adelaide's SANFL side.
