Bio
Recruited from Ararat, Matthew Young began his AFL journey with Hawthorn, where he served a difficult apprenticeship in the mid-1990s. Despite showing potential, he struggled to command a permanent spot in the Hawks' best 22 and was delisted following the 1996 season. St Kilda offered him a lifeline by selecting him with pick 41 in the 1997 Pre-Season Draft, a move that proved to be an astute piece of recruiting as Young immediately seized the opportunity to revitalise his career at Moorabbin.
At St Kilda, Young established himself as a disciplined, hard-running wingman known for his endurance and ability to link play between the defensive and forward arcs. He became an integral component of the Saints' engine room during their resurgence, missing only one game in his first season at the club and playing a key role in the side that reached the 1997 Grand Final. While not a prolific ball-winner or goal-kicker, his consistency and work rate ensured he remained a regular fixture in the senior side until his retirement at the end of the 2001 season.
