Bio
Recruited from Bungaree near Ballarat, Maurice O'Keefe was a ball-winning wingman who balanced midfield drive with a sharp eye for goal. He made an immediate impact at St Kilda, enjoying his best campaign in 1978 when he averaged 17 disposals and booted 29 goals, finishing third in the club’s best and fairest count during a lean era for the Saints. Despite his on-field value, O'Keefe’s time at Moorabbin ended abruptly due to a club policy requiring players to reside in Melbourne; unwilling to leave his country base, he requested a clearance to Geelong in 1980. His VFL career fizzled out at Kardinia Park, where he managed just a single senior appearance in Round 1 before losing his spot. O'Keefe eventually returned to the bush, cementing his reputation as a country football star by winning the Maskell Medal with Port Fairy in the Hampden Football League in 1984.
