Recruited from Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley, Maurice Wingate was a versatile mid-sized utility who spent five seasons on Melbourne’s list in the late 1970s. Breaking into the senior side as an 18-year-old, he often found himself on the fringe of selection, struggling to cement a permanent spot in the 22 despite a promising run of 13 games in 1978. While his VFL career concluded without fanfare after falling out of favour in 1980, Wingate later carved out a distinguished legacy in the ACTFL with Ainslie. He became a pivotal figure for the Canberra club, playing in premiership victories in 1987 and 1990—winning the Best and Fairest in the latter year—before eventually rounding out his career as the coach of Belconnen.
