Bio
Recruited from St Patrick's College in Sale, Maurie Deery was a promising lightweight wingman and half-forward who made a rapid ascent through the Tigers' grades. He capped off a stellar 1964 season by winning the club's Under-19s Best and Fairest award—featuring in a squad that included future legend Kevin Bartlett—and making his senior debut against Geelong at just 17 years of age. Despite this early potential, his time at Punt Road was brief, limited to five senior appearances across two seasons before he opted to return to the Gippsland region in 1966. Deery subsequently became a stalwart for Bairnsdale in the country leagues, winning a club best and fairest more than a decade after his VFL exit, and settled into life as a farmer.
