Bio
Recruited from Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley, Maurie Fowler arrived at Princes Park in 1966 as a talented centre half-forward who was forced to reinvent himself as a rover to account for the height demands of VFL football. Handed his debut by Ron Barassi in the season opener against Richmond, Fowler played eight of the first nine games of the year, showing flashes of potential as a crafty forward and notably booting the winning goal against South Melbourne in Round 4. Despite this promising start, he struggled to lock down a permanent place in a Blues midfield that was rapidly building toward a premiership window, and he departed the club after just one season. Following a brief stint in the VFA with Williamstown, Fowler forged a respected legacy in country football, embarking on a decades-long journey as a successful playing-coach across regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland.
