Stats
Bio
Recruited from local club Newtown & Chilwell, Maurie Gear was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who earned his opportunity with Geelong during the height of the club’s golden era in the 1950s. Standing just 170cm, the 19-year-old broke into a senior lineup stacked with premiership stars like Bob Davis and Fred Flanagan, debuting in Round 3, 1954 against Essendon at Windy Hill. He held his spot for a victory over St Kilda the following week but struggled to retain a place in a midfield rotation that was among the league’s strongest. While his VFL career was limited to just two senior appearances, Gear’s selection as a teenager in such a dominant squad underscored his potential and standing within the local leagues.
