A foundation player for the Demons, Maurie Herring was a talented all-round sportsman who balanced elite football with cricket and his academic studies at Trinity College. Standing 180cm—a significant height for the era—he was a versatile defender who typically manned the backline, using his size to quell opposition attacks. His place in club folklore was sealed during Melbourne’s shock 1900 premiership campaign; after moving to country Victoria for work and missing the entire home-and-away season, Herring returned to the side to play just two games that year, culminating in the Grand Final victory over Fitzroy. He proved his value as a big-game specialist again in 1901, answering an emergency call to play a semi-final after another season-long absence, ultimately establishing a reputation as a reliable "commuter" who could step straight into the defensive 18 when the stakes were highest.
