Recruited from Sale in the Gippsland region, Maurie Reeves joined Melbourne for the 1953 season as the club began its ascent under coach Norm Smith. A half-forward who made his debut in the opening round against North Melbourne, Reeves managed to hold his spot for the first half of the year, contributing four goals during his brief stint in the senior side. Despite showing promise early in the campaign, he was unable to retain his place in the lineup beyond the mid-season mark and departed the VFL after just one year to return to country football.
