Bio
Recruited from local club Parkside, Max Cross was a high-impact full-forward who produced one of the most explosive debut seasons in Footscray’s history. He did not break into the senior side until Round 5 of the 1956 season but made an immediate statement with five goals on debut against South Melbourne. Cross maintained this prolific form to finish the year with 52 majors, topping the club's goalkicking and finishing just four goals shy of the league leader, a remarkable feat given his late start. He proved his worth in September with a crucial four-goal performance in the semi-final win over Geelong, but his fortunes turned quickly in 1957. Struggling to replicate his maiden season heroics, Cross fell out of favour and unsuccessfully sought a clearance to country team Bena before departing the VFL after just two seasons.
