Bio
Recruited from Oak Park, Max Crow developed into a versatile and reliable utility for Essendon, capable of playing as a ruck-rover or pushing forward to present a marking target. His ability to hit the scoreboard was a defining feature of his game, maintaining a better than one-goal-per-game average throughout his career and topping the Bombers' goalkicking in 1977. A consistent performer during the club's transitional phase in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Crow was a fixture in the side under Tom Hafey and during the initial years of Kevin Sheedy's tenure. However, as the club looked to reshape its list for a premiership assault, he was cleared to St Kilda prior to the 1983 season, narrowly missing out on Essendon's flag success that year.
At Moorabbin, Crow added valuable experience to a struggling Saints outfit, continuing to provide a steady hand and regular goals over three seasons. He finished his VFL career with a single season at Footscray in 1986, retiring just shy of the 200-game milestone. While he never captured a premiership, Crow is remembered as a durable and effective journeyman who provided significant service across three clubs during a hard-nosed era of Victorian football.
