Bio
Recruited from Benalla in country Victoria, Max Howell was a versatile small utility who arrived at Princes Park just as the Blues were celebrating their 1947 premiership success. A natural centreman who had to adapt to roles on the wing, back pocket, and half-forward flank to break into a formidable lineup, he spent three seasons on the fringe of senior selection. Howell managed sporadic appearances—often as a reserve or injury replacement—but struggled to cement a regular spot in the starting 22 of a powerful Carlton side. Seeking greater opportunity, he crossed to the VFA early in the 1950 season to join Oakleigh, where he eventually found the team success that eluded him at VFL level by becoming a premiership player for the Oaks.
