Bio
Hailing from the Riverina town of Leeton, Max Kruse was a sturdy key position player who became a fixture of the Swans' lineup during the turbulent relocation from South Melbourne to Sydney. The son of a former VFA ruckman, he joined the club in 1979 through its country zone and proved himself as a durable utility capable of holding down centre half-back or providing a target at centre half-forward. Kruse was renowned for his wholehearted effort and physical commitment, traits that saw him play 53 consecutive games between 1981 and 1984. His fierce loyalty was perhaps best illustrated during a fiery 1983 encounter against St Kilda, where he found himself reported in the wake of the acrimonious transfers of teammates Paul Morwood and Silvio Foschini. A persistent thigh injury restricted him to just three games in 1985, after which he moved to South Australia and enjoyed a successful SANFL career with Glenelg.
