Bio
Recruited from local club East Sandringham, Max Nowlan was a reliable defender whose senior career was largely stifled by the immense strength of St Kilda's backline during the era of Verdun Howell and Neil Roberts. After captaining the Saints' Under-19s to a premiership in 1957, he debuted in the seniors in 1959 but found himself stuck behind a formidable defensive unit, playing just two games before spending three seasons in the seconds. Nowlan achieved a rare distinction at the club by captaining the 1961 Reserves premiership side, completing a unique leadership double across the lower grades. He earned a brief recall for six games in 1962 when injuries struck the back pocket, eventually departing to captain-coach Bentleigh in the Federal League and later winning a flag as coach of Maryborough.
