Bio
Recruited from the local Kingsville club in the Footscray District League, Max Oates was a homegrown talent who broke into the senior side as a teenager. Standing at just 173cm, he was a compact rover and forward pocket capable of sneaking under the guard of opposition defenders. He made his VFL debut midway through the 1960 season at only 18 years of age, managing to hit the scoreboard during his brief stint in the seniors. Oates' career at the elite level was ultimately confined to that single year, finishing with four games and one goal to his name before departing the Western Oval.
