Recruited from Moorabbin in the VFA, Max Papley arrived at South Melbourne as a mature-age recruit who quickly adapted to the rigours of VFL football. Operating primarily as a rover and resting forward, he was known for his goal sense and ability to win his own ball, traits that would later be mirrored by his grandson, current Swans star Tom Papley. His most significant individual achievement came in 1966 when he won the club's Best and Fairest award, a remarkable feat given he was playing alongside three-time Brownlow Medallist Bob Skilton. After four consistent seasons at the Lake Oval, Papley returned to the VFA to become captain-coach of Williamstown, leaving the elite level as a highly respected figure who made a substantial impact in a short timeframe.
