Bio
Hailing from Pakenham in the Gippsland region, Max Smethurst arrived at Hawthorn as a sturdy recruit for the 1935 season. Standing 182cm and weighing 83kg, he possessed the physical dimensions of a key position player or follower in that era, earning an immediate call-up for the opening round of the year. Smethurst tasted success on debut in a tight four-point victory over North Melbourne at Arden Street and held his spot in the selected side for three consecutive weeks, facing Carlton and Melbourne in subsequent rounds. However, he was omitted following the Round 3 loss at the MCG and unable to force his way back into the senior lineup, ending his brief VFL career after just those three early-season appearances.
