Family

Recruited from Werribee South, Max Smith joined his older brother Ron at Essendon for the 1940 season. He broke into the senior lineup as a wingman and held his place late in the year, notably featuring in the club's semi-final victory over Geelong. Despite showing promise across his seven games, his career was cut short by a devastating tragedy just a year later. While playing a local cricket match for Werribee, Smith was fatally struck by a delivery bowled by his younger brother Clive—who later played League football for North Melbourne—and died from the injury at the age of 23.
