Hailing from the rich footballing territory of the Riverina in New South Wales, Mel Rudd was a country recruit who ventured south to join Fitzroy from the Collingullie Football Club. He earned his opportunity early in the 1935 season, debuting in a Round 4 clash against Geelong at Brunswick Street Oval. Standing at 175cm, Rudd was a smaller utility player who managed to snag his solitary career goal during a short run in the senior side. His foray into VFL football proved fleeting, as he struggled to lock down a permanent position in the Maroons' lineup and departed the league after just five appearances in his single season at the top level.
