Bio
Hailing from the Riverina town of Ariah Park, Merv Brooks moved to Melbourne to work as a blacksmith and was recruited to Fitzroy from Sunshine YCW after catching the eye of a scout. A rugged half-back described by his family as being "all bone," Brooks played with a straight-ahead, physical style that often unsettled opponents. His senior VFL career was restricted to just two games across 1943 and 1944, largely because the travel distance between his home in Sunshine and the club prevented him from attending training sessions regularly. Despite his limited senior opportunities, he was a member of the Roys' 1944 reserves premiership side and later continued his football journey in the VFA with Preston. A dedicated clubman who remained a lifelong supporter, Brooks eventually held the distinction of being Fitzroy's oldest surviving former player prior to his passing in 2011.
