Bio
A prolific rover and half-forward recruited from Coburg in the VFA, Merv Harbinson was a classic depth player who found his path to senior football blocked by one of the greatest lineups in VFL history. Originally an Essendon Under-19s leading goalkicker who developed his game in the VFA, he returned to Windy Hill as a mature-age recruit but struggled to break into Kevin Sheedy's back-to-back premiership sides. While restricted to just two senior appearances, Harbinson was a dominant force in the seconds, winning the Reserves Best and Fairest in both 1983 and 1985 and playing in a Reserves premiership. His contribution to the club's culture during this dynasty era was significant, evidenced by him winning the Best Clubman award in 1984 despite rarely taking the field for the seniors.
