Honours

Recruited from Daylesford, Merv Hobbs was a crafty rover and forward pocket who became a cult hero at the Western Oval for his ability to play above his size. Despite standing just 175cm, Hobbs possessed a vertical leap that defied his frame, a trait immortalised by his iconic "hanger" over Melbourne ruckman Trevor Johnson in the 1961 Preliminary Final, which helped propel Footscray into that year's Grand Final against Hawthorn. While the Bulldogs fell short in the decider, Hobbs established himself as a dangerous goal sneak over the following seasons, using his agility to crumble packs and eventually topping the club's goalkicking list in 1965. However, his promising VFL career was cruelly cut short at just 23 years of age, when a severe knee injury sustained during the 1966 pre-season forced his premature retirement just as he was entering his prime.
