Bio
Recruited from Wycheproof, Merv Keane established himself as a cornerstone of Richmond's defence during the club's formidable 1970s era. Making his debut in 1972, he cemented his spot in the side as a disciplined back pocket specialist, renowned for his close-checking style and ability to negate dangerous opposition rovers. His reliability proved instrumental in the Tigers' back-to-back premierships in 1973 and 1974, where he formed part of a ruthless defensive unit under Tom Hafey.
Keane remained a key figure at Punt Road well into the following decade, adding a third premiership medallion to his collection in the comprehensive 1980 Grand Final victory over Collingwood. While he rarely troubled the scorers, kicking just 36 goals across his career, his value lay in his defensive accountability and durability. He retired in 1984 as a three-time premiership player and a Richmond Life Member, having played 238 games for the Tigers, leaving a legacy as one of the most dependable defenders in the club's history.
