Bio
Recruited from Collingwood Juniors, Merv Smith was a lean utility who crossed to Fitzroy to try his luck at senior level in the immediate post-war era. He arrived at the Brunswick Street Oval in 1946, joining a Lions squad that had won the premiership just two years prior, which made breaking into the senior lineup a difficult task for the developing recruit. Standing 180cm but weighing a slender 76kg, Smith lacked the physical bulk to dominate in key posts and often found himself on the fringe of selection, unable to secure a permanent niche in the side. His career was characterized by sporadic appearances rather than sustained impact, and he managed just nine goalless games across three frustrating seasons before departing the club at the end of 1948.
