Recruited from Camberwell Methodists in the local church leagues, Merv Yelland was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who earned a brief trial with Hawthorn during the club's difficult formative years in the VFL. Standing just 171cm, the lightweight attacker made his senior debut in Round 5, 1928, notably booting a goal in a high-scoring loss to Melbourne at Glenferrie Oval. He played one further game against Footscray the following week before falling out of the side as the Mayblooms—who would claim the wooden spoon that season—continued to churn through players in search of a winning formula. Yelland's football journey and life were tragically cut short when he died in 1931 at the age of 25.
