Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 32 in the 2012 National Draft, Michael Close was a key forward distinguished by his elite endurance and exceptional running capacity for a player of his size. While he possessed the work rate to push up the ground and create contests, his five-season tenure at the Brisbane Lions was severely hampered by injury setbacks. Most notably, his development was derailed in 2015 by a freak accident where he tore his ACL slipping on the astroturf run-off area behind the goals at the Gabba. Although he eventually returned to senior football, Close struggled to command a consistent spot in the Lions' best 22 and was delisted at the end of the 2017 season.
