Recruited as a mature-age access selection, Michael Coad arrived at the Gold Coast Suns with a reputation as one of the SANFL's premier key defenders. Previously the captain of Sturt, the 27-year-old was signed to provide a hardened body and leadership to the expansion club's youthful backline during their inaugural campaign. While he offered composure and structural discipline in the defensive 50, his AFL opportunities were severely restricted by injury, most notably a high-grade hamstring tear suffered in his debut season. Coad managed just six senior appearances over two years before being delisted, after which he returned to the Double Blues to continue his decorated state league career.
