Bio
Recruited from Surrey Hills under the father-son rule, Michael Coates arrived at the Junction Oval carrying one of the club’s most significant surnames as the son of Fitzroy patriarch and logo designer George Coates. The utility showed early promise in his debut 1982 season, making 15 senior appearances as a winger and half-forward, but he struggled to cement a regular spot in the senior side as the Lions surged toward finals contention in the mid-1980s. After finding himself on the fringe of selection and spending the 1985 season on the Sydney Swans' list without cracking a senior game, he returned to Fitzroy for a brief three-game stint in 1986 before concluding his VFL career.
