A tall prospect with a basketball background, Michael Gardiner was recruited from Subiaco via the 1997 Pre-Season Draft, arriving at Collingwood as a developing big man with significant athletic upside. Standing at 197cm, he offered the Magpies a mobile option capable of pinch-hitting in the ruck or playing as a key forward, notably possessing the clean hands and agility often associated with his sporting conversion. He broke into the senior side late in the 1998 season and added five games the following year, largely used as a depth player to support the club's established talls. Despite the promise shown by his height and coordination, Gardiner struggled to find the consistency required for elite football and was unable to cement a regular spot in the starting 22, departing the club with just seven senior appearances to his name.
