After dominating the VFL with Williamstown and claiming two J.J. Liston Trophies, Michael Gibbons finally earned his AFL opportunity as a mature-age recruit via the inaugural Supplemental Selection Period in 2019. Despite his background as a prolific ball-winning midfielder at state league level, he was largely repurposed by the Blues as a high-pressure small forward to accommodate the club's established engine room. Gibbons proved durable and consistent early in his tenure, playing every game in his debut season and earning respect for his elite work rate and goal sense. However, chronic groin injuries hampered his output in his final year, and he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
