Bio
A product of the NSW football pathway, Michael Hartley began his AFL journey as a scholarship holder with Collingwood but was delisted without making a senior appearance. Forced to earn a second chance through the state leagues, he impressed as a stoic key defender for Coburg in the VFL, prompting Essendon to recruit him with pick 68 in the 2015 National Draft. Hartley became an immediate fixture in the Bombers' backline during the club's depleted 2016 season, utilising his heavy frame and discipline to lock down opposition key forwards while offering a damaging long kick from defensive 50. Despite playing 44 games for the Dons, he eventually fell down the pecking order and moved to Hawthorn via the pre-season draft, where he provided defensive depth across two seasons before concluding his top-level career to return to Collingwood as captain of their VFL side.
