Bio
Recruited from Frankston in the VFL as a mature-age selection in the 2011 Pre-Season Draft, Michael Hibberd made an immediate impact at Essendon as a tough, rebounding defender. His tenure at the Bombers was ultimately interrupted by the club's supplements saga, which saw him miss the entire 2016 season due to suspension. Seeking a fresh start following the ban, Hibberd requested a trade to Melbourne, where he wasted little time re-establishing his credentials, earning All-Australian honours in his debut season with the Demons in 2017.
While known early in his career for his damaging left-foot drive from half-back, Hibberd later evolved into a disciplined lockdown specialist capable of nullifying the league's most dangerous small and medium forwards. His competitive edge proved vital during Melbourne's rise up the ladder, culminating in a premiership medallion in 2021 where he played a key role in the defensive unit. He retired at the end of the 2023 season, finishing his career on 197 games—agonisingly close to the double-century milestone—but leaving a legacy as an uncompromising defender who helped break the Demons' long premiership drought.
