Recruited from the Northern Knights with pick 5 in the 2008 National Draft, Michael Hurley began his career as a talented swingman capable of influencing contests at either end of the ground. While he announced himself early with a match-winning four-goal haul against Hawthorn in his debut season to secure a finals berth, he ultimately settled as a key defender. Hurley evolved into one of the competition’s elite backmen, renowned for his courageous intercept marking, strength in one-on-one duels, and a booming right foot that allowed him to act as a rebounding quarterback. His dominance in the defensive 50 was rewarded with All-Australian selection in 2015 and 2017.

Hurley's legacy at Tullamarine is defined by his loyalty and resilience during a turbulent era for the club. He remained a one-club player despite the supplements saga, serving a season-long suspension in 2016 before returning to reclaim his standing as a defensive pillar. Unfortunately, the latter stages of his career were derailed by a life-threatening hip infection in 2021 that kept him sidelined for over 500 days. After a grueling rehabilitation period, he returned for an emotional farewell appearance in the final round of 2022, kicking a goal to close out his time as a beloved spiritual leader of the Bombers.
