Bio
Recruited under the father-son rule, Michael James bore a famous name at Princes Park as the son of 1961 Brownlow Medallist John James. A product of the prolific St Pat’s Ballarat nursery, he broke into the senior side in 1991 as a centreman and wingman with a prodigious ability to accumulate possession. In his sole season of AFL action, he averaged an impressive 21 disposals per game—a remarkably high output for a teenager in that era—but found himself squeezed out of the rotation the following year as the Blues bolstered their engine room with the likes of Greg Williams. James was unable to regain his spot in the senior 22 and departed the club at the end of 1993, leaving behind a brief but statistically prolific career that hinted at unfulfilled potential.
