Bio
Recruited from Perth with pick 8 in the 2004 Pre-Season Draft, Michael Johnson proved to be an astute selection for Fremantle, evolving from a versatile utility into one of the club's most decorated defenders. In his early years, Johnson was often used as a swingman, drifting forward to kick goals or providing support in the ruck, but he ultimately found his calling as a rebounding defender. His playing style was characterised by a languid, almost casual demeanour that belied his effectiveness; he was an elite intercept marker and possessed exceptional poise, often launching counter-attacks with precise distribution from the back half while playing loose off his opponent.
Johnson's career reached its zenith in 2013 when his ability to read the play and control the tempo earned him All-Australian honours during Fremantle's charge to their maiden Grand Final. Although he faced significant scrutiny following an off-field indiscretion in 2010, he worked to regain the trust of the club, eventually earning selection in the leadership group and serving as a vital mentor for the Dockers' Indigenous cohort. Battling injury issues late in his career, he retired in 2018 as a Fremantle Life Member, leaving the game as one of the club's all-time games record holders and a central figure in their most successful era.
