Bio
Recruited from Leongatha in country Victoria, Michael Johnston was a mid-sized utility who faced the enviable but difficult task of breaking into a star-studded Hawthorn lineup during the tail end of their golden era. He made an immediate impact upon his debut in 1991, gathering 20 disposals and kicking two goals against Brisbane at Princes Park, but found sustained opportunities limited in a squad boasting established premiership heroes. Unable to cement a regular spot in the senior 22 over four seasons at Glenferrie Oval, he was delisted and subsequently handed a lifeline by Footscray in the 1995 Pre-Season Draft. Despite the change of scenery, Johnston added just two more senior games to his tally at the Western Oval before his top-level career concluded, remembered as a capable depth player who unfortunately peaked while stuck behind some of the game's greatest names.
