Recruited from Mount Waverley, Michael Laffy was a towering key defender who battled injury and form during a difficult period for the Richmond Football Club. Standing 194cm, Laffy possessed strong hands and contested marking ability that made him a viable option at full-back or centre half-back, though his field kicking often drew scrutiny and kept him on the fringe of selection. He managed just 26 senior games over five seasons at Punt Road, struggling to string appearances together before shifting to the VFA with Port Melbourne, where he enjoyed a solid second act as a ruckman. While his AFL career was brief, Laffy later achieved unique cult status in retirement when he was revealed as the saboteur on the 2001 season of the reality television show The Mole.
