Bio
Recruited from East Malvern, Michael Lockman was a much-travelled utility who carved out a unique path through the VFL system during the 1980s. After rising through the ranks at Richmond, where he played in an Under-19s premiership and won a Reserves Best and Fairest, Lockman struggled to cement a regular senior spot, prompting stints in the WAFL with West Perth and the SANFL with South Adelaide to build his experience. He returned to Tigerland in 1986 but, in a rare mid-season move for the era, crossed to arch-rivals Collingwood after just three games to bolster the Magpies' half-back line. Lockman played out the remainder of that season and the next at Victoria Park before heading north to join the Sydney Swans, where he featured regularly in the first half of the 1988 season. Following his 30-game VFL career, he became a prolific goal-kicker and coach in country football, notably captain-coaching Colac to a premiership in the 1990s.
