Family

Recruited from St Mary's in the Northern Territory, Michael Long arrived at Essendon with a rich footballing pedigree as a member of the Tiwi Islands' famous Rioli-Long dynasty. He made an immediate impression, winning the league's Best First Year Player award in 1989, and quickly established himself as a dynamic wingman known for his blistering speed and silky evasive skills. Long's ability to break lines and deliver in crucial moments was most famously displayed in the 1993 Grand Final, where his running goal against Carlton helped secure the premiership and saw him awarded the Norm Smith Medal.

While knee injuries restricted his continuity in the latter stages of his career, Long remained a vital spiritual leader for the Bombers, eventually retiring as a dual premiership player after the dominant 2000 season. His impact extended far beyond the boundary line; his stand against on-field racial abuse following the 1995 ANZAC Day clash was the catalyst for the AFL's introduction of Rule 30 regarding racial vilification, cementing his status as a pioneer for Indigenous players and a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
