Bio
Recruited from St Joseph's via the North Ballarat Rebels, Michael Mansfield established himself as one of the premier half-back flankers of the 1990s. While capable of playing on the wing or drifting forward, he was best known for his courage and aerial ability in defence during Geelong's high-scoring era under Malcolm Blight. A consistent performer who rarely shirked a contest, Mansfield became a vital component of the Cats' backline, earning back-to-back All-Australian selection in 1994 and 1995. He featured in three Grand Final defeats for the club, serving as a reliable senior figure as the team challenged for the premiership throughout the decade.
Following the 1999 season, Mansfield was traded to Carlton as Geelong looked to regenerate its list and alleviate salary cap pressure. The move ended a decade-long association with the Cats, but he offered immediate value to the Blues, adding experience to a squad that reached the 2000 Preliminary Final. He played 54 games across three seasons at Princes Park, maintaining his reputation as a professional and competitive defender before retiring at the end of 2002.
