Bio
Recruited from the prolific football nursery of Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong in the Riverina, Michael Phyland joined the Sydney Swans as a zonal selection during the club's colourful private ownership era. A versatile utility capable of operating on the wing or across the half-forward flanks, he offered flexibility to a Swans lineup that was often unsettled during the late 1980s. Despite his ability to find space and contribute to link-up play, Phyland struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior 22, often oscillating between the reserves and the first team. He served as a depth player throughout his four-year tenure at the SCG before departing the top level following the 1990 season.
