Bio
Recruited from East Doncaster, Michael Poynton broke into the Fitzroy lineup as a teenager, establishing himself as a crafty half-forward with a sharp eye for goal. A lightly built attacker who relied on elusive movement and goal sense rather than physical size, he enjoyed a breakout season in 1981, booting 32 goals and notably kicking three majors in the Lions’ Elimination Final victory over Essendon. Despite that promising form, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior side over the following two seasons and departed the VFL landscape at just 22 years of age. Poynton subsequently found a second wind in the SANFL with North Adelaide, where he proved his class as a prolific forward by averaging well over two goals a game during his time in South Australia.
