Teams

Recruited from Subiaco with the eighth overall selection in the 1991 National Draft, Michael Symons arrived at Essendon as a high-flying West Australian prospect. He quickly established himself in Kevin Sheedy's lineup, becoming a key component of the youthful "Baby Bombers" side during the 1993 season. However, his career narrative is often defined by a moment of brutal personal heartbreak; after playing 19 consecutive games that year—including the Qualifying and Semi Finals—he was omitted from the Preliminary Final team to make way for returning skipper Mark Thompson, ultimately forcing him to watch the club's premiership victory from the sidelines.

Despite that early setback, Symons carved out a respectable eight-season tenure at Windy Hill, evolving from a marking forward into a dashing half-back flanker. Renowned for his vertical leap and ability to take a spectacular "hanger," he provided x-factor and speed, even if his finishing was occasionally mercurial. He remained a regular senior player through the mid-90s before injuries and the depth of Essendon's list saw him drift to the fringe of the squad. He finished his AFL time by helping the Bombers secure the 1999 Reserves premiership before returning to the WAFL, where he continued to excel for Subiaco.
