Bio
Recruited from Warrnambool in the Hampden Football League, Michael Turner debuted for Geelong in 1974 and rapidly established himself as one of the premier wingmen of the VFL. Renowned for his electrifying pace and endurance, Turner redefined the role of the outside midfielder, using his ability to carry the ball over long distances to break opposition defensive zones and regularly hit the scoreboard. His consistency was remarkable throughout a 15-season career, resulting in regular state selection for Victoria and a reputation as one of the most damaging ball-carriers in the competition.
Turner's leadership qualities saw him appointed club captain from 1984 to 1986, a period where he also claimed the Carji Greeves Medal as the club's best and fairest player. While he played in several finals campaigns, including the preliminary final near-misses of the early 1980s, premiership success ultimately eluded him. He retired at the end of 1988 holding the long-standing record for the most VFL/AFL games played without a Grand Final appearance, a statistic that highlights both his durability and the fortunes of the Geelong sides he led. A member of the Geelong Hall of Fame, he is remembered as an elite runner who drove the Cats through the 1970s and 80s before serving the club as a long-term administrator.
