Bio
Originally from Canberra and recruited via West Torrens in the SANFL, Michael Werner was a talented key forward taken by Essendon with pick nine in the 1988 National Draft. He arrived at Windy Hill to add tall timber to the Bombers' attack, utilising a fast lead and a reliable set shot to become a serviceable option inside 50. While he was unable to cement a permanent spot during the club's 1990 premiership campaign, he demonstrated his value in big games, notably kicking four goals in the 1991 Elimination Final against Melbourne. Squeezed out of the lineup by Essendon's depth, he was traded to Sydney at the end of 1992, where he immediately made a statement by booting a career-best six goals against his former side in just his third game for the Swans. Werner finished his AFL career after two seasons in Sydney but later became a local football legend for Gisborne, where he kicked a league-record 173 goals in the 1997 Riddell District Football League season.
