Bio
A towering ruckman standing 196cm, Mick Bates was recruited to Windy Hill from Reservoir Old Boys. Possessing exceptional height for the era, he offered the Bombers a significant advantage at stoppages and an imposing aerial target. Bates broke into the senior side late in the 1971 season, making his debut against Footscray and managing to boot a goal during his brief time at the top level. Despite his physical attributes, he was unable to cement a permanent spot in the Essendon lineup, with his VFL career limited to just two senior appearances before he departed the elite competition.
