Bio
Recruited from Heathcote, "Mad Mick" Madden was a fiery redhead who made an immediate impact at Essendon with his vigorous play and immense physical strength. A versatile key position prospect capable of lining up at centre half-forward, centre half-back, or in the middle, Madden was famous for his "tremendous hands" and a rare ability to scoop the ball up one-handed at full pace. He led the club's goalkicking in his first two seasons (1903 and 1904), acting as a focal point in attack before shifting further up the ground to impose himself on the contest. Despite being recognized as one of the league's premier performers by 1906, he left the VFL in his prime to join Essendon Association in the VFA, where he played until 1915 before embarking on a significant second career as a VFL Grand Final goal umpire.
