Recruited from Sebastopol, Mick McGuane established himself as one of the premier ball-carrying midfielders of the early 1990s. He was an integral member of Collingwood's drought-breaking 1990 premiership side, celebrated for his explosive pace and ability to surge away from stoppages to break opposition lines. His individual standing at Victoria Park peaked shortly after the flag, seeing him claim back-to-back Copeland Trophies in 1992 and 1993 alongside dual All-Australian honours. McGuane is frequently remembered for his iconic seven-bounce running goal against Carlton in 1994, a moment that encapsulated his dashing and instinctive playstyle.

Despite his status as a club favourite, McGuane's tenure at Collingwood ended abruptly at the conclusion of 1996. Amid a list regeneration strategy and reported friction with club leadership, he was traded to arch-rivals Carlton. The move generated significant attention given the historic hostility between the two clubs, but McGuane was unable to impact the Blues' lineup as he had hoped. Persistent groin and hamstring injuries restricted him to just three appearances in the navy blue guernsey before he retired midway through the 1997 season.
