Bio
Recruited from Tarrawingee in the Ovens and Murray League, Mick Nolan arrived at North Melbourne in 1973 and quickly established himself as one of the most distinctive figures in VFL history. Affectionately known as "The Galloping Gasometer," Nolan was a ruckman of immense proportions whose playing weight often exceeded 110 kilograms. Despite the constant scrutiny regarding his size, he was a footballer of rare touch and skill, possessing soft hands and the ability to direct hit-outs with surgical precision to the club's running brigade.
Under the tutelage of Ron Barassi, Nolan became a premiership player in 1975, famously shouldering the ruck load virtually unchanged on Grand Final day. His lack of mobility was compensated for by his immovable presence in contests and his capacity to distribute the ball effectively by hand and foot. He remained a fixture at Arden Street until 1980, retiring as a beloved cult hero who defied the conventional athletic mould of the era to become a vital component of North Melbourne's first golden age.
